Saan ang espiritu ng mga Vietnamese?

November 22, 2018

By Evyn Lê Espiritu

“Saan ang espiritu ng mga Vietnamese?” (“Where is the spirit of the Vietnamese people?” in Tagalog) documents my search for what remains of the Vietnamese refugee camps in Palawan and Bataan, Philippines.  As an Asian American of both Vietnamese and Filipina descent, I am driven not only by an archival curiosity, but by a personal desire to reconnect with this history of the Vietnamese in the Philippines—a history structured by war, refugeeism, and US imperialism in the Asian Pacific.  On my journey I discover not only the haunting remains, but also the social life of the Vietnamese Filipinos.

This was a very beautiful and empowering video that was put together! I felt touched by seeing the representation of Vietnamese people, especially the sign that said, “The Viet Village is a symbol of eternal friendship between Filipinos and Vietnamese and the beginning of a new era of co-existence and cooperation.” It was truly inspiring!!
